PRINCE HARRY SAYS PSYCHEDELICS HAVE BEEN A “FUNDAMENTAL” PART OF HOW HE DEALS WITH TRAUMA

By now, whether you’ve read Prince Harry’s memoir, Spare, or not, you’re no doubt well aware that it was a royal revelation machine. It was like Harry was in a one-sided game of truth or dare and choosing “truth” Every. Damn. Time.

The story of losing his virginity (in a public field behind a pub, no less)? Put it in. An anecdote about Prince William physically assaulting him? Include it. It truly felt like there were no holds barred (which is impressive, considering *many* holds were apparently barred). Included on the long list of Topics Harry Discussed in Spare That the Royal Family Probably Would Have Preferred He Hadn’t: Harry’s experiments with recreational drugs.

The royal dug deeper into the topic of his (very positive) experiences with psychedelic drugs this weekend during a livestreamed discussion with trauma expert Gabor Maté, MD.

“It was the cleaning of the windscreen, the removal of life’s filters—these layers of filters—it removed it all for me and brought me a sense of relaxation, relief, comfort, a lightness that I managed to hold back for a period of time,” Harry explained (per Page Six). “I started doing it recreationally and then started to realize how good it was for me.”

Harry isn’t alone in finding real benefits to taking psychedelics, which a growing number of neuroscientists believe could be used to treat a range of mental health issues.

“I would say it is one of the fundamental parts of my life that changed me and helped me deal with the traumas and the pains of the past,” Harry added of his experience with the drugs. “They’re unlocking so much of what we’ve suppressed.”

During the discussion, Harry also talked about the role therapy has played in his personal journey—and in his infamous “feud” with the royal family.

“A lot of families are complicated, a lot of families are dysfunctional, but for me, when I was doing therapy regularly…I felt that I learned a new language,” he explained.

Unfortunately, as Harry added, he quickly realized that the people he was surrounded by (which would seem to include several members of the royal family) did not speak that language, which became an obstacle in those relationships.

“This is working for me and I’m starting to go back to the point of trauma and unpack everything so I can be truly happy…but at the same time, I’m feeling more and more distant from my loved ones and my family,” he explained.
