TOM HOLLAND'S HUGE VIDEO GAME MOVIE TOPPING NETFLIX CHARTS HAS FANS VERY DIVIDED

Netflix always gives films a resurgence when they drop on the streaming site, and this Tom Holland flick has created quite the divide among fans.

Uncharted, also starring Mark Wahlberg, is based on the video game franchise of the same name.

Directed by Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer, the action-adventure film was originally released last year to pretty lukewarm reviews. It currently has 2 out of 5 stars on Rotten Tomatoes.

Its description on the Netflix site explains the blurb of the film, as it reads: ‘Street-smart treasure hunter Nathan Drake (Tom) and his renegade mentor Sully (Mark) set out on a dangerous adventure across the globe to find Magellan’s lost gold.’

Added to Netflix over the weekend (26 November), and fans are discussing this new addition to the roster, with some more convinced than others.

‘Uncharted is now on Netflix if you wanna see a fun treasure hunt adventure that’s absolutely nothing like Uncharted,’ wrote one person, who is clearly more of a fan of the 2007 video game, which has seen a number of iterations since its first release.

Others also weren’t convinced, as one said: ‘Uncharted is on Netflix but its still a bad movie and that makes me so sad.’ Ouch.

But others were slightly more forgiving, as one fan said they would simply view it as a ‘big budget fan film’.

‘Uncharted on Netflix is not bad for an action movie,’ wrote another, while someone else said on X, formerly Twitter: ‘Watched the Uncharted film on Netflix, and it wasn’t a bad movie. I loved it!’

But some people were truly buzzing for the offering, as someone wrote: ‘They’ve added Uncharted to Netflix. brb about to go back into my nathan drake era.’

Someone else was skeptical of the casting, but reckoned they would give it a go anyway.

‘Uncharted is on Netflix, I’m checking it out despite I still think all the actors were miscast, Tom Holland as Drake and Mark Wahlberg,’ they said.

In the original development, Mark was cast to play Drake, until Tom was eventually cast as the plucky young adventurer in his place.

The 52-year-old The Fighter star told TheWrap of the switcheroo: ‘I was onboard with David O. [Russell] and then we kind of moved on to another filmmaker and then another filmmaker and then I was just kind of like, it was all in limbo.

‘So I was ready if they needed me, and then when I finally got the call they were like, “We’re ready to go,” and I was like, “Cool, who’s the other guy?” I thought are we gonna get Jack [Nicholson]? Tommy Lee Jones? And then all of a sudden they’re like, Tom Holland and I’m like, “For what?” And they said, “For Nathan, you’re gonna be Sully,” and I said, “What?”’

Due to he Covid-19 pandemic, the film’s release was delayed after it failed to meet its December 2020 release date.

It grossed $407.1million making it the fifth-highest-grossing video game film of all time, despite mixed reviews from critics.
